High Performance Bi-Block Sleeper for Improvement the Performances of Ballasted Railway Track

2012

Abstract This article focuses on the performance of an innovative railway sleeper, recently patented in Italy and called “HP-BB” (High Performance Bi-Block sleeper), under different efficiency conditions of the ballast. The research is carried out through a comparative assessment of traditional mono- and bi-block sleepers, evaluating the lateral resistance of the single sleeper thought as independent of the other constituents of the track.

Nonlinear Robust Control of a Quadratic Boost Converter in a Wide Operation Range, Based on Extended Linearization Method

2022

This paper proposes a control system for a quadratic boost DC/DC converter in a wide range of operations, based on an inner loop with a sliding mode controller, for reaching a desired equilibrium state, and an outer loop with integral-type controller, for assuring robustness against load and input voltage variations and converter parameter uncertainties. The sliding mode controller is designed with the extended linearization method and assures local asymptotic stability, whereas the integral controller is designed using classical frequency methods, and assures input–output stability. It is shown that the proposed controller also deals with the sudden changes in the nominal operating conditi…

A Novel Adaptive Sliding Mode Controller for a 2-DOF Elastic Robotic Arm

2022

Collaborative robots (or cobots) are robots that are capable of safely operating in a shared environment or interacting with humans. In recent years, cobots have become increasingly common. Compliant actuators are critical in the design of cobots. In real applications, this type of actuation system may be able to reduce the amount of damage caused by an unanticipated collision. As a result, elastic joints are expected to outperform stiff joints in complex situations. In this work, the control of a 2-DOF robot arm with elastic actuators is addressed by proposing a two-loop adaptive controller. For the outer control loop, an adaptive sliding mode controller (ASMC) is adopted to deal with unce…

Deformation of melt-bearing systems—insight from in situ grain-scale analogue experiments

2005

Abstract The deformation behaviour of partially molten rocks was investigated using in situ analogue experiments with norcamphor+ethanol, as well as partially molten KNO 3 +LiNO 3 . Three general deformation regimes could be distinguished during bulk pure shear deformation. In regime I, above ca. 8–10 vol.% liquid (melt) fraction ( ϕ bulk ), deformation is by compaction, distributed granular flow, and grain boundary sliding (GBS). At ϕ bulk ϕ bulk (regime III), grains form a coherent framework that deforms by grain boundary migration accommodated dislocation creep, associated with efficient segregation of remaining liquid. The transition liquid fraction between regimes I and II ( ϕ LT ) dep…

Robust control of stochastic systems against bounded disturbances with application to flight control

2014

This paper investigates the problems of state observer design and observer-based integral sliding-mode control (SMC) for a class of Itô stochastic systems subject to simultaneous input and output disturbances. A new type of sliding-mode-based descriptor observer method is developed to approximate the system state and disturbance vectors. An integral-type SMC scheme is proposed based on the state estimation to stabilize the overall system. The main contributions of this approach are as follows: 1) The desired estimations of state and disturbance vectors can be obtained simultaneously, and 2) in the designed sliding-mode observer, the integral term of the Itô stochastic noise is eliminated …

Sensorless small wind turbine with a sliding-mode observer for water heating applications

2015

Water heating applications consume a considerable portion of electricity demand in most of countries. Small wind turbines are one of attractive alternatives for grid electricity based water heating systems. Wind energy can be converted to heat energy in a high efficient manner. However it is essential that wind turbine based water heating systems should be economical and reliable. Maximum power point tracking algorithm of most of available wind turbines requires information from a wind speed sensor and a rotor speed sensor which reduces the reliability of the system. In this paper, the proposed 5 kW wind turbine does not require external wind speed sensors and rotor speed sensors. The syste…

Absolok® versus Hem-o-Lok® clips for renorrhaphy during partial nephrectomy for parenchymal renal tumors

2020

Background To compare perioperative and functional outcomes associated with renorrhaphy performed with two different types of clips (Absolok® vs. Hem-o-Lok®) in a contemporary series of patients who underwent partial nephrectomy. Methods Patients in whom Absolok® clips were used to perform haemostasis at the level of tumor bed or to block the running sutures during sliding-clip renorrhaphy (study group) were compared with a contemporary control group of patients in whom renorrhaphy was performed with Hem-o-Lok® clips. Both groups received the same surgical technique via an open or robot-assisted approach. Inner renorrhaphy was performed with one or more 3-0 (26 mm needle) monofilament runni…

Nanoindentation response analysis of Cu-rich carbon–copper composite films deposited by PVD technique

2015

Abstract The micromechanical properties of sputter deposited amorphous carbon–copper (a-C/Cu) composite films with different carbon content (6.8–19.8 at.%) were investigated. Atomic force and electron microscopy studies confirmed that the a-C/Cu films have a two-phase microstructure of amorphous sp 2 /sp 3 -bonded carbon as a composite matrix with embedded copper nanocrystallites encapsulated in a graphene shell. Load–displacement curves obtained in nanoindentation experiments followed Meyer's law with the exponent varying slightly within the interval 2.0–2.2 depending on the penetration depth and carbon content. The reverse indentation size effect was observed which was most likely the res…

Laser densification of organic coating: Effects of laser wavelength, operating parameters and substrate properties

2012

International audience; Mechanical bonding and interface behaviour play a key role for any materials deposited on different substrates. Usually, a post-spray heat treatment is required to improve the coating morphology and to enhance mechanical properties of thermal-sprayed polymeric coating. The effects of YAG, CO2 and diode laser radiations on as-sprayed PEEK coating deposited on stainless steel and aluminum substrates were investigated. The results revealed a good coating densification and interface behavior. A correlation between coating and substrate absorption coefficients, their thermophysical properties and laser operating parameters was shown. Besides, the finite element modeling b…

Traditional vs. sliding-joint masonry infilled frames: Seismic reliability and EAL

2020

Abstract In reinforced concrete (RC) multi-storey buildings, the important role of the seismic interaction of structural frames with masonry infills has been revealed by several earthquakes and investigated by many authors. Recently, several innovative infill solutions have been proposed to mitigate such interaction, which could result in widespread damage in both the masonry and the RC structure and sometimes jeopardize the building stability and the occupants’ safety. One solution consists in the partitioning of the masonry infill into several sub-panels, relatively sliding along specific joints. This paper investigates the seismic assessment of this technological solution in the framewor…
